Mamdouh Shoukri biography

Universities Canada board director

Mamdouh Shoukri joined York University as president and vice-chancellor in July 2007.

Dr. Shoukri is a director on the board of Universities Canada and serves on the association’s Research Committee.

Dr. Shoukri came to York from McMaster University where he had been vice-president of research and international affairs since 2001. He joined McMaster’s faculty in 1984 and was appointed chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department in 1990 and dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 1994.

In addition to his roles at York, Dr. Shoukri serves on the Ministry of Industry’s Space Advisory Board and the Loran Scholars Foundation Board. He chairs the Government and Community Relations Committee for the Council of Ontario Universities. He is also a member of the Ontario Research and Innovation Council and was a founding board member of the Ontario Centres of Excellence.

Dr. Shoukri was named a Member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario in 2013. His scholarly interests are in thermo-fluid science, and he is the author or co-author of more than 120 papers that have appeared in refereed journals and symposia.

His education credentials include a BSc (Hons), mechanical engineering, Cairo University, 1970; MEng, McMaster University, 1974; and a PhD, mechanical engineering, McMaster University, 1977.
