Assistant Director
International Relations

We are currently recruiting an assistant director who will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of international relations based on an annual strategic plan that includes policy analysis and development, government relations, information-sharing and executing engagement activities in priority countries. Working with other members of the senior leadership team in the Policy and Government Relations team, the incumbent is responsible for helping to ensure that the international interests of Canadian universities are well understood in national and international fora.  In addition, the incumbent will be proactive in developing networks in governments, member institutions, and international stakeholders to advance Universities Canada’s advocacy objectives on priority issues including international student mobility, education marketing, and immigration policy.

In order to advance Universities Canada’s international agenda, the ideal candidate will be pro-active, responsive, nimble and collaborative, with proven success in gathering strategic information, as well as in developing and maintaining information sources in government. The incumbent will effectively represent the association and advance its advocacy and international relations objectives with key government departments, partner organizations abroad, the diplomatic community in Ottawa, and national organizations involved in international education.

If you are right for this opportunity, you will possess the education and experience listed below:

Education and experience

  • A graduate degree, preferably in international relations or a related discipline.
  • Five to seven years of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience working in international relations or within the federal government.
  • Experience working in a university, national association and/or membership organization is an asset. 

Knowledge

  • Excellent understanding of higher education, research and innovation issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of current federal political and policy environment, including parliamentary procedures.
  • Knowledge of tactics for advocating to government. 

Abilities/Qualities

  • Tenacious and can easily translate ideas and strategies into concrete plans and action to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to analyze, understand and explain issues and events in complex policy fields, including an analysis of government projects/policies or any other initiative that is likely to have an impact on the international dimension of higher education and research.
  • A capacity to work at the senior levels of the university sector, governments, international partners and other pertinent groups.
  • Superior ability to plan, analyze trends and forecast activities.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy, sound judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to gather strategic intelligence, and to develop and maintain information sources in government and universities.
  • Bilingualism essential including excellent English writing skills.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent project management, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure while balancing competing priorities.
  • High degree of discretion and insight.

The position is based in Ottawa. Universities Canada has adopted a hybrid work model where employees are expected to work in the office a minimum of three (3) out of ten (10) days.

The hiring salary range for this position is from $92,868 to $113,183 depending on experience.  Candidates who do not meet all of the position requirements may be considered in an underfill capacity, in which case the candidate would be hired at a lower level than the position level.

Senior Government
Relations Officer

We are currently recruiting a senior government relations officer and a senior government and international relations officer to work with our policy, external and member relations team . Incumbents will master complex higher education issues and communicate Universities Canada policies to a variety of audiences, including parliamentarians, federal officials, and other organizations with an interest in higher education. The incumbents will be proactive in developing and maintaining networks in governments, member institutions, and other stakeholders and advancing the interests of Canadian universities in national and international fora.

In order to advance Universities Canada’s advocacy agenda, the ideal candidates will be pro-active, responsive, nimble and collaborative, with proven success in implementing engagement and outreach activities.
