Editor – University Affairs / Affaires universitaires

Want to lead an award-winning magazine and an amazing team of writers? Are you interested in delivering breaking news, insightful commentary and in-depth articles about university trends? Do you like creating dynamic, innovative and engaging content for Canadian and international audiences?

University Affairs/Affaires universitaires (UA/AU) – THE source of information about and for Canada’s university community – is looking for its next editor. Think you have what it takes?

Leading a team of staff journalists and freelancers, the editor sets the direction for the multi-platform magazine, which published in print six times a year, posts online and to social media daily, engages readers through a weekly e-newsletter and is undergoing a digital evolution as its online audience continues to grow exponentially.

Specifically, the Editor fosters a collaborative team approach to production and:

  • Ensures the quality and timeliness of print and online content
  • Develops and fosters connections within the university sector
  • Is the public face of UA/AU and represents the publication at events within the sector.

Published by Universities Canada — the organization that represents Canadian universities at a national and international level — UA has editorial autonomy and is known for integrity, credibility and journalistic excellence. It is also the largest source of career ads for people seeking academic positions in Canada.

To help us take the UA brand to the next level, we’re looking for someone with vision, savvy and the managerial excellence to help us reach our aspirational goals while working with the talented team to ensure top-notch journalism and smooth operations. If you are an experienced journalist with excellent news judgement, the creative spark to inspire the team to develop and produce engaging content on time and within budget, have excellent editorial skills (writing/editing), and strong leadership and interpersonal skills, we would like to hear from you. At least 6 years of experience in a related position is needed and a keen interest in higher education would be a tremendous asset.

This is a position with many hats. The ideal person for this position:

  • has sound leadership and managerial skills and the ability to motivate a team
  • thrives under time and other resource constraints
  • is creative, organized, self-motivated and pays attention to detail
  • can identify news trends and opportunities, while gauging readers’ needs and understanding their interests
  • is bilingual
  • knows their way around social media platforms
  • has experience working in a multi-platform publishing environment and – by extension – versed in the use of WordPress, Office 365 apps, Adobe Acrobat and InCopy
  • has a university degree and considerable journalism experience.
