Principales installations

The Dahn Lab focuses on the physics and chemistry of materials for energy storage, primarily in the area of lithium-ion batteries. The lab’s industrial sponsor is Tesla Motors/Energy, the world leader in electric vehicles and energy storage products.

The Renewable Energy Storage Laboratory (RESL) at Dalhousie University conducts research on energy storage technologies to support the increased integration of renewable energy with the electricity grid. Current areas of focus include experimental battery systems, bi-directional chargers/inverters, as well as models and simulation of renewable generators and buildings.

The Organic Electronic Materials and Devices laboratory conducts cutting-edge research on solar cells with a focus on organic thin-film transistors, organic solar cells, and the physics of organic semiconductor interfaces.

The Obravac Lab focuses on the physics and chemistry of advanced sodium-ion, magnesium-ion and other metal-ion batteries. The lab designs, synthesizes, characterizes, and tests new materials for use in next-generation practical battery technologies for use in electric vehicles.

Grands projets

The Clean Technology Research Institute facilitates research in this critical area at Dalhousie. Researchers across the university work in interdisciplinary teams to innovate around, among other topics:

  • Energy storage including batteries, supercapacitors and thermal storage.
  • Energy production including solar fuels and photovoltaics
  • Energy policy and life cycle analysis.

Chercheurs

  • Dr. Jeff Dahn, NSERC/Tesla Industrial Research Chair (IRC) and CRC Tier 1 in in Battery and Fuel Cell Materials, is recognized as one of the pioneering developers of the lithium-ion battery that is now used worldwide in laptop computers and cell-phones. Dr. Dahn began a five-year research partnership with Tesla in 2016 as an NSERC/Tesla IRC, the first such partnership between the car company and a Canadian university. Dr. Dahn received one of the inaugural Governor General’s Innovation Awards in 2016.
  • Dr. Mita Dasog, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, researches and develops cheaper, safer and more efficient materials and technologies for harvesting and storing solar energy. Dr. Dasog was named a “Top 25” Global Young Scientist and one of 2017’s “Top 150 Canadian Women in STEM”.
  • Dr. Ghada Kholeilat’s research focus is developing highly efficient, low-cost, eco-friendly solar cells with regenerative capabilities in long-term stability. Dr. Kholeilat’s first research publication in the American Chemical Society’s journal “ACS Nano” was one of the ten highest -cited articles in the journal for four consecutive years.

Programmes spéciaux et apprentissage intégré au travail

  • Dalhousie’s strategic research direction is grounded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, and features signature research clusters, one of which is Clean Tech, Energy, the Environment. (SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, & 17).
  • Dalhousie, Metamaterial Technologies Inc. and Mitacs are collaborating on a $1.62 million research project around light manipulation. Supervised by Dr. Ian Hill, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows will investigate absorption enhancement of ultra-thin solar cells using metamaterials; light emission for LEDs; development of optical filters based on metamaterials; and improvement of medical diagnostics using metamaterials.
