Biorefining Research Institute develops transformative, sustainable technologies and products based on boreal forest biomass. https://www.lakeheadu.ca/research-and-innovation/facilities-centres/bri
Biomass Utilization Research Laboratory offers access to the unique pulping research facilities in the Chemical Engineering Department at Lakehead University. The lab contains similar equipment located at pulp and paper mills, as well as equipment that is able to recreate the pulping process. Though the facility is highly involved in research, its facilities are excellent for sampling and testing. https://lucas.lakeheadu.ca/burl/
Dr. Pedram Fatehi (Chemical Engineering), Industrial Research Chair in Green Chemicals and Processes – $814,854 in funding from Northern Ontario Heritage Fund (partners include FPInnovations and Resolute Forest Products and Gold Corp).
Dr. Pedram Fatehi, NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant, plus funding from OCE and industry: Process Development for the Production of Lignin Based Flocculants and Dispersants, $630,000 (in partnership with FPInnovations).
Dr. Baoqiang Liao (Chemical Engineering), NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant, plus funding from partner organization: Effects of Cold Temperature and Chemical Cleaning on Performance, Membrane Fouling and its Control in Drinking Water Membrane Filtration, $206,700. Partner: City of Thunder Bay.
- Dr. Pedram Fatehi, CRC in Green Chemicals and Processes, Department of Chemical Engineering. His research involves developing green chemicals and processes in forest biorefinery.
- Dr. Baoqiang Liao, Department of Chemical Engineering. Research areas include: Membrane bioreactors, membrane separations, membrane fouling, wastewater treatment, particle science and technology, colloidal and surface chemistry, sludge management, anaerobic digestion, environmental nanoparticle technology, environmental engineering, biorefinery, bioenergy production.
- Dr. Gautam Das, Department of Physics. Combatting Climate Change. The Photonics Research Group at Lakehead University is developing a device to monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emitted from the agriculture fields due to the application of fertilizers. The research program would develop a methodology for the application of Right fertilizer at the Right time, and Right amount, which will reduce the emission of greenhouse gas, and reduce pollution of our waterbodies due to drainage of excess fertilizer.
