Principales installations

McGill Institute for Advance Materials-MIAM’s vision is to discover, design, fabricate and understand new materials. MIAM research facilities: Nanotools Microfab (MNM) is a micro-nanotechnology platform that is aimed at providing micro-nanofabrication tools and know-how to academic and industrial research; Characterization Facility comprises major tools for the development of both chemical and biological functionalization processes.

Green Chemistry and Catalysis include: McGill Mass Spectrometry Facility (MSF) offers a comprehensive range of mass spectrometry techniques, using six mass spectrometers equipped with a range of ionization methods; The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility houses solution spectrometers ranging between 300 and 800 MHz, and a 400 MHz solid state spectrometer.

Grands projets

Metal fuels as clean energy carriers for powering the Canadian Arctic project led by Dr Jefferson Bergthorson proposes to build and analyze the performance of a turbulent metal-fuel burner. Metal fuels will favor the development of renewable energy across the country, including the Arctic.

Fabrication and characterization of Li2(Fe,Mn)SiO4 cathode materials for new generation lithium-ion batteries led by Dr George Demopoulos is aiming to contribute towards the development of next generation lithium-ion battery nanostructured electrode materials characterized by high energy density, fast charging rates, safety, long lifetime but also lower cost to meet the emerging electric automotive industry needs.

Chercheurs

George Demopoulos, Prof. and Hatch (Gerald G.) Chair in Mining & Metallurgical Engineering. His research is in the area of aqueous processing of inorganic materials; unit operations in hydrometallurgy; clean environmental technologies; cells for solar energy conversion (DSCs) and storage (LIB-Li-ion batteries).

Tomislav Friščić, Associate Prof. and William Dawson Scholar, EWR Steacie Memorial Fellowship. Friščić is a leading researcher in the fast-growing field known as “mechanochemistry” – an approach that uses mechanical force, rather than solvents, to drive chemical reactions.

Chaojun Li, Prof. and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Green/Organic Chemistry, Eddy (E.B.) Chair of Green Chemistry, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Director of NSERC CREATE in Green Chemistry and Green Chemicals and co-director of FRQNT CGCC. Research interests: Green Chemistry and Synthesis of biologically active compounds

Programmes spéciaux et apprentissage intégré au travail

McGill Sustainability Systems Initiative (MSSI) brings together experts from across McGill’s faculties, providing support and seed funding for transdisciplinary teams to tackle some of the most complex and challenging issues in sustainability.

-The CREATE in Green Chemistry aims to produce trainees who will be capable of assuming leadership roles in Canada’s transition to a clean technology-based economy. A key strength of this program is its strong multidisciplinary component with members bridging the gaps between chemistry, chemical engineering, and management /strategy.
