Principales installations

COSMO – Stochastic Mine Planning Laboratory (funded by 8 industry members) focuses on modelling orebodies and strategic mine planning, areas that are arguably the backbone of the mining industry and represent an intricate, complex and critically important part of mining ventures.

(CCDAA) Centre pour la conservation et le développement autochtones alternatifs led by Dr Colin Scott. Research: Life projects, living well, communities of life and indigenous ontologies; Customary tenure systems and territorial rights; Community mapping and landscape modelling.

Mine Design Lab & Numerical Modelling is engaged in a wide range of research activities in collaboration with the mining industry.

McGill Metals Processing Centre (MMPC) has strong research program related to the manufacturing, processing and characterization of steels and the light metals.

Grands projets

Smart mining complexes: Large-scale stochastic optimization, high-order simulation and self-learning decision support systems for sustainable development of mineral resources led by Dr R Dimitrakopoulos and in collaboration with 5 mining companies. The project aims to contribute new methods to the Canadian and global mining industry that will change the way in which problem-solving in the field is approached.

Pipeline wear in minefill distribution systems led by Dr F Hassani and in collaboration with 6 mining companies. The project focuses on the causes of wear in underground minefill distribution systems and how this wear affects the transport of minefill to underground mines.

Chercheurs

Roussos Dimitrakopoulos, Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Sustainable Mineral Resource Development and Optimization Under Uncertainty. In 2011 he received the Leo Derikx Award under Synergy Awards for Innovation. His research involves developing new, risk-based modelling technologies for holistic mine planning, design, and production scheduling founded upon stochastic modelling, and optimization.

Ferri Hassani, Professor and Webster Chair in Mining Engineering. His research relates principally to mine design, rock mechanics, renewable energy from mines, geo-sensing and mine backfill.

Hani Mitri, Professor and Director of Mining Engineering Co-op Program. Research focuses on applied rock mechanics addressing mine safety issues related to the stability of underground mine developments, surface mine pit walls, and mine tailings dams.

Programmes spéciaux et apprentissage intégré au travail

-The McGill EngInE, the Faculty of Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship hub, focuses on stimulating technologically-based innovation and entrepreneurship at McGill in collaboration with the McGill Dobson for Entrepreneurship and the Office of Inovation and Partnership.

eIDEA: Engineering Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity Advancement-all initiatives under the program focus on all stages of the student and staff lifecycle, from pipeline building and recruitment, to support and retention, to workforce diversity.
