Principales installations

Labrador Institute – A Laboratory in North West River, which is fully functional to support a variety of agricultural and soil research programs

Joe Brown Aquaculture Research Building — this 1400 m2 facility and its staff provide support for research, pre-commercial production, and small scale commercial trials in marine aquaculture. This facility has recently been upgraded with a new seawater system, and adjoining facilities for disease research.

Boreal Ecosystem Research Initiative (BERI) Laboratory – state-of-the-art laboratory facility that provides infrastructure for scientific research in the environmental, boreal and agricultural sectors.

Grands projets

Boreal Ecosystem Research Initiative – This project supports the development of the BERI laboratory and research expertise. The program supports federal, provincial, university and private sector research priorities in forestry, agriculture and the environmental sector.

Mitigating the Impact of Climate Change on Salmon Aquaculture (MICCSA) Employing genomics and other biotechnologies, this project is developing biomarkers of stress and disease resistance in Atlantic salmon. The goal is to develop broodstock and research tools that will allow the aquaculture industry to successfully manage the challenge of a changing environment.

Integrated Pathogen Management of Co-Infection in Atlantic Salmon – development of specialized fish feeds that will help combat co-infections using functional genomics

Chercheurs

Garth Fletcher, Professor Emeritus and Head of the Department of Ocean Sciences: A global authority on fish antifreeze proteins and transgenic fish whose team developed a genetically engineered salmon that grows twice as fast as standard cultured Atlantic salmon. His pioneering research was distinguished when the FDA declared these fish to be safe to eat, making them the first genetically modified animal product to be considered safe for human consumption, and by Time Magazine when his work was named as “One of the 50 Best Inventions of 2010”.

Ashlee Cunsolo, Director, Labrador Institute; former Canada Research Chair in Determinants of Healthy Communities; member of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists: Named one of the founding members of Nature Canada’s 75 Women for Nature, Dr. Cunsolo has spent over a decade working with Inuit in Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, Labrador on climate change and its impact to their health. As a community-based researcher, she is highlighting how changes in the land, weather, snow, ice, plants, and animals are impacting Inuit food security and sense of identity.

Adrian Unc, Associate Professor, Boreal Ecosystems and Agricultural Sciences: As a member of the Boreal Ecosystem Research Initiative (BERI), Dr. Unc’s research incorporates soil and water sciences with standard microbiology and molecular tools to answer questions related to eco-friendly agricultural production in order to ensure environmental quality, human health and food sustainability.

Kurt Gamperl, Professor, Ocean Science: His research is broadly interested in fish environmental physiology and marine finfish aquaculture and takes an integrative multi-level approach to answer research questions in these areas. His research employs a variety of genetic and physiological tools that have been employed to address issues of developing disease resistance strains of fish for aquaculture and matching new strains of salmon that can be used with newly developed plant-based diets.
