Principales installations

Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place – MMaP – estsablished to forward cutting-edge research on music and culture. MMaP is home to students, visiting scholars and post-doctoral fellows, a state-of-the-art audio restoration lab, a dance studio, and presentation and meeting spaces.

Centre for Health Informatics and Analytics (CHIA) – includes a next generation health informatics and data analytics hardware and software platform, which will facilitate the rapid interrogation an integration of complex source data from multiple partner organizations.

Grands projets

Memorial ElectroAcoustic Research Lab – This multidisciplinary project involved the development of a new musical instrument with the capabilities of a digital instrument but the expressiveness of an acoustic one.

Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory –Developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and Unmanned Surface Craft(USC) that can be deployed in cold ocean environments. This technology has applications for high frequency radio for ship and iceberg tracking, oil spill and pollutant tracking, search and rescue planning, oceanographic and climate change research, as well as meteorological applications.

OmOptics: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Technology Development for Emerging Fibre Optic Communication Network Develops, implements and tests ultrahigh-speed optical communication networks.

Chercheurs

Beverley Diamond, Professor Emerita,, former Canada Research Chair in Ethnomusicology (the country’s first in a music discipline), SSHRC Gold Medal recipient, fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, former Trudeau Fellow and Member of the Order of Canada: A guiding voice in contemporary ethnomusicology, Dr. Diamond is a pioneering feminist musicologist, responsible for ground-breaking ethnographies on Indigenous music. She is particularly noted for developing cross-cultural perspectives on gendered musical practices.

Andrew Staniland, Associate Professor, Composition; member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists; recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Research and the Terra Nova Young Innovator Award; two time JUNO nominee:

Dr. Staniland is one of Canada’s most accomplished composers whose creative works are a blend of the traditional craft of musical composition with new and innovative digital media. He founded the Memorial ElectroAcoustic Research Lab where his group created the MUNE, a significant new development in the field of new electronic interfaces for musical performance.

Octavia Dobre, Professor, Engineering and Applied Science; Research Chair in Subsea Communications: Dr. Dobre’s research interests include 5G wireless systems, blind signal identification and parameter estimation techniques, transceiver optimization algorithms, cooperative communications, resource allocation, as well as optical and underwater communications.
