Queen’s Centre for Energy and Power Electronics Research (ePOWER) is focused on collaborations to advance fundamental energy and power electronics research to develop a broad range of commercially competitive and environmentally friendly technologies.

Solar Calorimetry Laboratory operates under the direction of Dr. Stephen J. Harrison with a focus on the development and evaluation of test methods and standards for solar heating systems and components.

GreenCentre Canada is a Centre for Excellence in the Commercialization of Research, located in Kingston, Ontario, focused on supporting the commercialization of emerging green chemistry innovations from academia and regional businesses.

Grands projets

Photovoltaic power systems: $4M from the Ontario Research Fund – Research Excellence to Dr. Praveen Jain to develop small-scale, point-of-use photovoltaic (solar) power systems for residential use.

Engineered Nickel Catalysts for Electrochemical Clean Energy: A research team, led by Queen’s researcher Gregory Jerkiewicz, will use an NSERC Discovery Frontiers grant ($4M) to develop the next generation of nano-structured nickel-based materials for energy storage and generation technologies.

Recycling Waste Carbon Dioxide: A research team led by Dr. Philip Jessop, and supported by NSERC Discovery, is developing new means of recycling waste CO2 from power plants and other industrial processes.

Oil and Water Repellant Coatings: An NSERC CRD collaboration, led by Dr. Guojun Liu, with Lorama, is related to oil and water repellent coatings for industrial applications.

Chercheurs

Dr. Philip Jessop, Canada Research Chair in Green Chemistry, uses carbon dioxide as a “trigger” to change “switchable materials” from one form to another.

Dr. Warren Mabee, Canada Research Chair in Renewable Energy Development and Implementation, uses existing models of energy systems to assess different ways of increasing renewable energy use.

Dr. Praveen Jain, Canada Research Chair in Power Electronics, advances high frequency power conversion technology for smart micro-grid and renewable energy systems

Dr. Guojun Liu, Canada Research Chair in Materials Science, has led the development of nano- and micro-structured materials (NMMs) constructed from block and graft copolymers to make important fundamental and applied scientific contributions.

Dr. Kim McAuley, Chemical Engineering, develops mathematical models of chemical and biochemical processes to predict product quality, production rates and effectiveness for industrial processes.
