Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) Research of this team is multidisciplinary and collaborative seeking to understand the complex interrelationships between elements of Earth systems, and how these systems will likely respond to climate change. Although researchers have worked in many regions, the Arctic marine system has always been a unifying focus of activity.

Grands projets

BAYSYS (Hudson Bay System) Study is a comprehensive scientific study that aims to contribute to a scientific basis to understand the relative contributions of climate change and regulation on the Hudson Bay system. The role of freshwater in Hudson Bay will be investigated through field-based experimentation coupled with climatic-hydrological-oceanographic-biogeochemical modeling.

Arctic Ice, Freshwater Marine Coupling and Climate Change research integrates western science with Inuit/Indigenous knowledge through direct input from Inuit knowledge holders, community-based monitoring programs, extensive in situ field studies, and international sharing of field and laboratory logistics. The program examines the influence of increasing freshwater fluxes to the Arctic ocean with a particular focus on the coupled Baffin Bay and Hudson Bay systems.

Chercheurs

  • Julienne Stroeve, Canada 150 Research Chair. Research focuses on improving understanding of the climate forcing of sea ice and how changes in sea ice contribute to the large-scale freshwater marine coupling of the Arctic Ocean.
  • David Barber, Canada Research Chair and Distinguished Professor. His research focuses on field and theoretical research to expand scientific knowledge of the effects of global warming on sea ice in the Arctic, and to develop more effective tools to predict, and deal with, its potentially harmful effects.
  • Søren Rysgaard, CERC Laureate. Research focuses on marine microbiology and biogeochemistry, pertaining to the structure and function of Arctic marine ecosystems.
  • Feiyue Wang, Canada Research Chair. Research focuses on understanding the release of contaminants in the Arctic that have been stored for a long time and the effects these contaminants will have in the Arctic under this changing ecosystem.

Programmes spéciaux et apprentissage intégré au travail

The Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO) will be a globally unique, highly innovative, multidisciplinary research facility located in Churchill, Manitoba, adjacent to Canada’s only Arctic deep-water port. The CMO will directly address technological, scientific and economic issues pertaining to Arctic marine transportation, and oil and gas exploration and development throughout the Arctic.

Canadian Arctic GEOTRACES part of an international program involving more than 30 nations with the goal to understand the large-scale oceanic distribution, biogeochemical cycles and climate-sensitivity.
