Institute for Water Innovation is dedicated to developing innovative solutions for sustainable water management by establishing the needed knowledge base, developing innovative technologies, and educating future leaders.
Southern Ontario Centre for Atmospheric Aerosol Research conducts interdisciplinary research on the origins, characteristics, environmental impact, and human health consequences of atmospheric aerosols, to improve air quality and human health, and reduce the adverse ecological and climatic influences of aerosols on the environment.
BioZone is a multidisciplinary research hub that leverages the tremendous advancements in genomic sciences and their unique complementary expertise to tackle a wide range of research topics at the intersection of biology and engineering, including sustainable production of biofuels and bioproducts, bioremedation of contaminates in ground water, wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, and cellular and protein engineering.
Biochemicals from Cellulosic Biomass – This research project is focused on engineering yeast and bacteria to produce difunctional compounds from renewable resources. These chemicals will replace monomers typically produced from the petrochemical industry, thereby reducing green-house gas emissions and toxicity.
Anaerobic Digestion for Wastewater Treatment –This project investigates anaerobic digestion of organic waste to develop alternative approaches to recover energy from waste liquid and solid streams, and to help address the enormous economic and the environmental pressures facing most industries and municipalities.
Integrative Agroecology – This interdisciplinary research program investigates plant strategies and the nutrient economy of agroecosystems, including practices that improve the efficiency of nutrient cycles, optimize plant-soil interactions, and promote landscape scale services in low-input agriculture and agroforestry systems.
Marie-Josée Fortin, Canada Research Chair in Spatial Ecology – Research focuses on conservation biology issues, including how ecological processes and environmental factors affect species persistence, species dispersal, and species range dynamics.
Marney Isaac, Canada Research Chair in Agroecosystems and Development – Research focuses on plant strategies and the nutrient economy of agroecosystems, and practices that improve the efficiency of nutrient cycles, optimize plant-soil interactions, and promote landscape services in low-input agriculture and agroforestry systems.
Barbara Sherwood Lollar, Canada Research Chair in Isotope Geochemistry of the Earth and the Environment – Research focuses on microbial communities that do not need sunlight to survive and new techniques to pinpoint the source of groundwater pollution.
David Sinton, Canada Research Chair in Microfluidics and Energy – Research focuses on energy, environment, fluid mechanics, microfluidics, nanofluidics, carbon management, CO2-to-products.
Programmes spéciaux et apprentissage intégré au travail
Bachelor of Applied Science, Sustainable Energy Minor – The need for greener, more sustainable energy resources in the era of climate change is critical, as is the need for more engineering expertise in sustainability. This program focuses on the sustainable use of energy, energy demand management and public policy related to sustainability.
Master of Forest Conservation – A 16-month program that immerses the student in all aspects of forest conservation including a 3-month internship with an organization aligned with the student’s interests, as well as domestic and international field courses.
