Quebec university students release a guide to breaking gender barriers in STEMM fields

The Science & Policy Exchange, run by graduate students and post-doctoral fellows at Montreal universities, has published a report outlining seven barriers for women seeking leadership in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) and 20 recommendations to help faculty and leadership make STEMM spaces more inclusive for all genders.

Barriers for women seeking leadership in STEMM include challenges around family planning, the criteria for excellence, hiring practices, and the lack of men participating in the conversation. Recommendations to overcome the barriers include discussing implicit bias with hiring committee members, creating awareness around parental leave, and making sure harassment policies are enforced.
