York University moves forward on reconciliation with Indigenous peoples

Look for another fashion fundraiser at York University during the autumn of 2018 to support Indigenous peoples in Ontario.

The university’s first fundraiser in summer 2017 helped build a better school for the youth of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation in southern Ontario.

In December, the university organized Indigenous Fashion Week for its second event to raise funds for Pikangikum First Nation, one of the largest First Nations communities in northern Ontario.

The third event this fall is also expected to revolve around fashion.

These initiatives flow from the Sustainable Development & Revitalization (SDNR) for First Nations Community Engagement. York and the Schulich School of Business founded SDNR in 2015 after two years of consulting with faculty, elders, chiefs, and stakeholders. Over the past three years, it has built relationships between Indigenous communities and academia, and raised awareness and funds for Indigenous projects.
