Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC) is a research initiative and resource base established to promote the study of history, economy and cultures of the lands and peoples of the IOW. The centre has the largest historical data set on human-environment interaction in the IOW from 1800 to the present day, and on indigenous IOW environmental risk strategies.
McGill Arctic Research Station (MARS) is located 8km inland at Expedition Fjord, Nunavut, on Central Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian High Arctic. The station consists of a small research hut, a cook house, and two temporary structures.
Mobile Robotics Lab (MRL) led by Drs Gregory Dudek and David Meger focuses on sensor-based robotics, the use and understanding of sensor data through computer vision and machine learning, as well as decision-making under uncertainty. The lab has mobile robots that operate underwater, in the air, on the ground, on the sea.
The Indian Ocean World: The making of the first global economy in the context of human environment interaction, led by Dr. G Campbell, investigates the rise and development of the world’s first “global economy” in the context of human-environment interaction from early times to the present.
NSERC Canadian Robotics Network (NCRN) is a consortium of leading robotics researchers from across Canada that includes members from universities, industry and government. NCRN aims to build technologies and robotic systems that will allow heterogeneous teams of robots to work effectively together in unstructured outdoor environments. The network addresses issues corresponding to different application domains: Land, Air, Water (including marine robotics), Human.
Gwyn Campbell, Prof. and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Indian Ocean World History, and Director of IOWC. He is specialist in the economic history of the Indian Ocean region. Strong interest in the dynamics of minority cultures, imperialism, globalisation and third world development.
Nathalia Gomez, Assistant Prof. and Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in the Geodynamics of Ice Sheet-Sea Level Interactions. Research: interactions between ice sheets, sea level and the solid Earth, and the response of these systems to past, present and future climate changes.
John Gyakum, Prof. and Canada Steamship Lines Chair in Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences. Research: dynamical processes associated with tropical cyclones that ultimately affect the Atlantic Canada provinces.
Alfonso Mucci, Prof. Michael J. Keen Medal from the Marine Geosciences Division of the Geological Association of Canada. Research: characterization of mineral-solution interactions in aquatic environments, carbonate geochemistry, early diagenesis of marine and coastal sediments.
Special programs and work integrated learning initiatives
–McGill affiliation with The Huntsman Marine Centre for education an research. The HMSC is a nonprofit, charitable organization dedicated to research and education. It offers access to salt marsh, estuarine, intertidal beach and rock, and coastal marine systems as well as forest, field, stream, and lake sites.
–J.S Marshall Radar Observatory houses a dual wavelength meteorological Doppler radar, unique in Canada, a vertically pointing high resolution radar and other instruments offers also the opportunity for research projects related to operational meteorology, radar hardware and signal processing
