Memorial University of Newfoundland | Oceans
Cold-Ocean and Deep-Sea Research Facility (CDRF). This $20M CFI-funded facility provides aquatic research facilities, including a certified biocontainment facility histology, microscopy, deep-sea and disease challenge equipment.
Holyrood Marine Base. The $20M expansion of the Base supports at-sea research and training priorities related to ocean science and ocean technology.
Centre for Arctic Resource Development (CARD). An $18M facility dedicated to supporting responsible, cost-effective hydrocarbon development in the Arctic.
Suncor Energy Offshore Research and Development Centre. A $6.8M resource focusing on solving technical challenges facing offshore industries.
Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI). Memorial, Dalhousie and U. Prince Edward Island partnered to receive $93.7M from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund for ocean sciences research forming the $227M OFI. OFI focuses on solutions for safe and sustainable ocean development.
Development of Autonomous Marine Observation Systems (DAMOS). The $13M CFI-funded project will develop and deploy marine instrumentation to transform Canadian capabilities to monitor and understand ocean phenomena in support of the ocean technology sector.
Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe). The $6.5M project will help Canada meet national and international commitments on sustainable oceans. It will also advance the new National Conservation Plan, a blueprint to protect Canada’s rich natural heritage which aims to increase protected areas and focus on stronger marine and coastal conservation.
Uta Passow, Canada Research Chair in Biological Oceanographic Processes: A highly regarded and internationally renowned biological oceanographer, who, throughout her career, has repeatedly contributed to and challenged major oceanographic concepts relevant to the marine carbon cycle. She was one of the first researchers to begin ocean acidification (OA) work and her findings have set the standards and developed protocols for ongoing and future OA research. – Marlies discuss this with Pam before submitting
Paul Snelgrove, University Research Professor, Ocean Science; Network Director, NSERC Canadian Healthy Oceans; Network Scientific Director, Ocean Frontier Institute; former NSERC Industrial Chair in Fisheries Conservation and Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Ocean Systems: Recognized as an international leader for his research on marine biodiversity, he has discovered that the complex interaction between the timing of spawning, ocean physics, and small-scale behaviours are all critical to the survival of marine species. He has made invaluable contributions to our understanding of marine life and how we manage living marine resources.
Brian Veitch, NSERC/Husky Energy Industrial Research Chair in Safety at Sea; fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering: The innovative simulator technology developed by Dr. Veitch has greatly improved marine safety worldwide. His simulators provide experience that is otherwise unavailable due to dangerous and unpredictable offshore conditions and has played a leading role in the creation of a standard for emergency escape, evacuation and rescue for the Canadian offshore industry.
Matt Rise, Professor, Ocean Science; former Canada Research Chair in Marine Biotechnology: Known for his development and use of genomic tools, such as DNA microarrays, for studies related to fish diseases, environmental toxicology, and aquaculture. His current work is focused on new therapeutic diets for farmed Atlantic salmon leading to healthier fish, a decrease in their disease and mortality, and a significant savings for the Canadian aquaculture industry.

NSERC CREATE Training Program for Offshore Technology Research. Trainees study, research and intern in the offshore industry linked to Canada’s research priority on natural resources and energy.
Offshore Safety and Survival Centre. Offers safety and emergency response training to the offshore, marine transportation, fishing and other industries (e.g. Helicopter Underwater Escape Training)
Marine Simulation Centre. Meeting training and development needs ranging from ship manoeuvring and procedural trials, performance examination, and customized training to operational efficiency reviews, marine equipment testing, and port design evaluation.
