Key facilities

Trent Centre for Aging & Society: The Centre’s mandate is to mobilize a critically-informed academic and public dialogue that advocates for the diversity of the aging experience, challenges ageist policies, and develops expertise for understanding and planning for Canada’s aging futures.

Emotion and Health Research Lab: The Lab focuses on promoting research about emotions, health and success in life, and training new researchers, educators and health care professionals.

Centre for Health Studies: The Centre primary objective is to assist researchers investigating various aspects of health in obtaining funding, fostering communications with internal and external health researchers, and publishing research.

Major collaborations

Mental health problems and barriers to employability in Ontario young adults: Led by James Parker, the goal of this project is to utilize a unique data-set from the Quinte Longitudinal Survey (QLS) to explore the multiyear prevalence of various mental health problems and their effect upon the employment outcomes of a representative sample of Ontario young adults.

Improving social inclusion for Canadians with dementia and caretakers through sharing dance: Led by Mark Skinner, this project focuses on the potential of an innovative arts-based intervention, the National Ballet School of Canada’s Sharing Dace for Seniors Program, to improve the social inclusion of people living with dementia and their caretakers.

Silver Nano-Particle Cancer Therapy: Led by Craig Brunetti, this project investigates medical grade Silver Nano-Particles (SNPs) and the potential of SNPs to kill cancer cells.

Researchers

Dr. Mark Skinner, Canada Research Chair in Aging, Health and Social Care. Dr. Skinner researches and teaches courses in qualitative methods, foundations of geographic thought, health geography, rural community sustainability and community-based research.

Dr. James Parker, Professor. James is an expert on emotional intelligence, personality and affect regulation.

Dr. A. Kirsten Woodend, Dean of the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing. Dr. Woodend’s research is primarily focused on Health services and continuity of care in aging and chronic illness and Inter/intra professional education, collaboration and practice.

Dr. Neil Fournier, Assistant Professor. The primary focus of Dr. Fournier is to better understand the mediators of brain plasticity that allow the organism to adapt to the challenges and demands encountered within its environment.

Special programs and work integrated learning initiatives

  • The Trent/Fleming School of Nursing: The Trent/Fleming School of Nursing offers an integrated, collaborative four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.) Degree. Opportunities for practical application of theoretical principles are offered throughout the program. The program exposes students to a variety of contexts within which nursing care is delivered in today’s world.
