Key facilities

The Alternative Village is venue for research, testing and industry partnerships. The Village is a multi-disciplinary centre that allows researchers to test and study conventional and non-conventional building techniques. Providing students with the ultimate in hands-on experience.

Major collaborations

NSERC CREATE H2O program for First Nations water and sanitation security is designed to address research science and training gaps that are preventing effective, culturally appropriate investments in water and sanitation security on First Nations lands. The program is the first science-engineering research training program in Canada that combines technical water and wastewater management training with Indigenous theory, law and methodological skills training.

FiCoGEN project focuses on the commercialization of biocomposite materials, to develop and test a prototype part from a parking enforcement vehicle using a novel biocomposite. The biocomposite uses flax fibres with traits enhanced for use in advanced composite materials (developed through previous Genome-Canada funded projects) and a binding resin/polymer produced from novel microbial strains.

Researchers

  • Nazim Cicek, Professor, Department of Biosystems Engineering. Research focuses on biological waste treatment, biofuel and bioenergy production processes, bio-polymer production, fermentation, anaerobic digestion and nutrient removal from wastewater.
  • Qiuyan Yuan, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering. Research focuses on environmental engineering, including nutrient removal and recovery, the technological implementation of biological phosphorus removal and chemical phosphorus recovery, as well as treatment, biomass fermentation, and anaerobic digestion.
  • David Lobb, Senior Research Chair for the Watershed Systems Research Program and Professor, Soil Science. Research focuses on biophysical processes within landscapes, particularly soil movement by tillage and tillage erosion.
  • David Levin, Professor, Biosystems Engineering. Research focuses on bioengineering for biofuels and bioproducts through the conversion of agricultural waste products into fuels.

Natural Resources Institute. The mission of the Natural Resources Institute is to create, preserve, communicate and apply interdisciplinary knowledge in areas of resource and environmental management, and thereby contribute to the well-being of the people of Manitoba, Canada and the World.
