Global Institute for Water Security: More than 200 U of S water scientists and students work in multidisciplinary teams to understand how climate change, land management practices, and natural resource development affect our water environment, developing improved modelling tools and sensor technologies to sustainably manage water and forecast water threats such as droughts and floods.

Global Water Futures: Solutions to Water Threats in an Era of Global Change: This CFREF-funded U of S-led national program delivers risk management solutions—informed by leading-edge water science and supported by innovative decision-making tools—to manage water futures in Canada and other cold regions where global warming is changing landscapes, ecosystems, and the water environment. The 33 projects involve 15 Canadian universities and more than 200 partners.
Legal Doctrine of Aboriginal Title: Focuses on Indigenous consultation and participation in natural resource development and theories of collective and group rights. Builds on research that has significantly advanced legal understandings of the place of Indigenous peoples in constitutional law.
- Dr. Jay Famiglietti, Canada 150 Research Chair in Hydrology and Remote Sensing. Uses satellite measurements and advanced tools to track how freshwater availability is changing around the world.
- Dr. John Pomeroy, CRC in Water Resources and Climate Change. Focuses on predicting changes in water supply caused by climate warming in cold regions.
- Dr. Markus Hecker, CRC in Predictive Aquatic Ecotoxicology. Focuses on assessing the risks associated with human activities on Canadian watersheds
- Dr. Cherie Westbrook, Professor of Geography and Planning. Focuses on land-water management and environmental change
- Dr. Ingrid Pickering, CRC in Molecular Environmental Science. Focuses on using synchrotron light to investigate how toxic elements interact with the environment at a molecular level.
- Dr. Steven Siciliano, NSERC/FCL Industrial Research Chair in In Situ Remediation and Risk Assessment. Focuses on how humans poison soil and how soil poisons humans.
