Key facilities

Centre for Biocomposites & Biomaterials Processing is developing next-generation energy-efficient lightweight performance nanomaterials for industrial applications, including aerospace, automotive, biomedical and electronics uses, by utilizing our primary and secondary natural resources.

Green Roof Innovation and Testing Laboratory is a platform for multidisciplinary collaboration focused on investigating the environmental performance associated with green and clean technologies such as green roofs, green walls and photovoltaic arrays – building technologies that can help mitigate climate change.

Institute for Sustainable Energy is a multidisciplinary centre that brings together researchers, students, and teachers together with partners from industry and government to increase energy efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact of energy use and conversion.

Major collaborations

Development of Smart and Sustainable Aeration Technology focuses on the development of renewable energy resources for aeration to significantly reduce electricity costs and the carbon emissions contributing to climate change, and that improve the sustainability of the aquaculture industry in developing nations.

Multiperformance Materials focuses on the knowledge transfer of multi-performance materials and technologies across disciplines, and in understanding and articulating the emerging relevance of performative landscapes as urban infrastructure. Specific topics include contemporary technologies and approaches to hybrid vegetal systems at multiple scales, and the design implications for dynamic systems.

The Solar Fuels Cluster is devoted to combatting climate change by developing scalable, cost-effective materials solutions for using CO2 as a chemical feedstock for valuable products, to initiate a paradigm-shifting zero-emission CO2 economy.

Researchers

Aimy Bazylak, Canada Research Chair in Thermofluidics for Clean Energy Research focuses on the study and utilization of microfluidic and nanofluidic transport phenomena to achieve unique material designs, operation strategies, and water management techniques for clean energy technologies.

Geoffrey Ozin, Canada Research Chair in Materials Chemistry and Nanochemistry – Research focuses on new classes of nanomaterials and green nanochemistry to develop new advanced materials and biomedical devices, as well as new ways to convert CO2 into fuel.

Elodie Passeport, Canada Research Canada in Environmental Engineering and Stable Isotopes – Research focuses on analytical tools based on stable isotopes to study the behavior of organic chemicals in surface water environments such as rivers and lakes.

Dwight Seferos, Canada Research Chair in Polymer Nanomaterials – Research focuses on electronic processes in organic materials including plastic electronics with potential applications ranging from batteries to solar cells to thermoelectronics.

Master of Engineering – Emphasis in Advanced Water Technologies & Process Design
Through the Emphasis in Advanced Water Technologies & Process Design, students are able to gain in-depth knowledge of water treatment methods and design of treatment processes.

Impact Centre Clean Tech Cluster – A platform devoted to creating a hub in Ontario that connects students and faculty with industries, academic institutions, government, and related organizations to spur the development of technologies that contribute to clean air, water, soil, and better cities in Canada and in communities around the world.
