Key facilities

University of Toronto Electric Vehicle (UTEV) Research Centre is a university-industry partnership focused on the development of groundbreaking technologies for Electric Vehicle.

Centre for Aerial Robotics Research and Education (CARRE) develops new technologies, teach students, and disseminate research results to Canadian aerial robotics companies.

University of Toronto Transportation Institute (UTTRI) specializes in systems analysis and policy evaluation, and are leaders in building and applying cutting-edge computer simulation models to the analysis and design of complex transportation systems.

Major collaborations

Sustainability of Urban Transportation Systems focuses on an empirical analysis of the relationship between urban form, transportation system configuration and the energy efficiency/environmental sustainability of urban transportation systems.

Dynamic Systems focuses on developing learning and adaptation capabilities for mobile robots to facilitate reliable, long-term robot applications. In particular, research centres around the challenges associated with robots—such as self-driving and self-flying vehicles—operating in increasingly unstructured, uncertain and changing environments.

Electric Vehicle Power Electronics aims to advance power electronics for electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, charging infrastructure, and energy storage. The overall goals are to improve EV driving range through enhanced efficiency, reduce high costs associated with an EV’s battery system through better energy utilization, and reduce charging times and improve access to charging facilities by lowering costs.

Researchers

Tim Barfoot, Canada Research Chair in Autonomous Space Robotics –Research focuses on advancing the visual navigation capability of mobile robots for use in transportation, planetary exploration, mining, warehouses, and military scenarios.

Birsen Donmez, Canada Research Chair in Human Factors and Transportation – Research focuses on supporting driver-automation and coordination in high information-access environments (intelligent mobility).

Matthew Roorda, Canada Research Chair in Freight Transportation and Logistics – Research focuses on urban freight data and modelling, freight optimization, and passenger transportation analysis.

Angela Schoellig, Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning for Robotics and Control – Research focuses on robot control and learning algorithms that enable robot systems to operate safely and effectively in real-world situations.

Olivier Trescases, Canada Research Chair in Power Electronic Converters and Director, U of T Electric Vehicle Research Centre –Research focuses on making tomorrow’s power management systems smaller, more efficient, more robust, and more reliable.

Special programs and work integrated learning initiatives

University of Toronto Blue Sky Solar Racing – An undergraduate team that designs, builds and races solar-powered vehicles. Students learn industry standard practices and professional skills they will use when they go into their chosen careers.

Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering, Emphasis in Transportation Engineering and Planning – The Program is intended to provide continuing and advanced education for graduates and engineers in professional areas such as public transit operations and planning, freight transportation, and transportation demand analysis.
