Toronto Institute for Advanced Manufacturing: Seeks to expedite research and development of advanced manufacturing technologies by focusing on translating lab-based technologies into commercial, scaled-up processes.

Centre for Biocomposites & Biomaterials: Focuses on using primary and secondary natural resources to develop next-generation energy-efficient lightweight performance nanomaterials for industrial applications.

Toronto Nanofabrication Centre: An interdisciplinary research and service centre that provides access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities, collaborative research networks, and advanced educational opportunities.

Major collaborations

Smart and Adaptive Materials investigates materials that possess unique properties, including the ability to sense and respond to different stimuli, and that can be used in a variety of applications including tissue engineering, light-weight materials, biologically inspired materials, biomedical devices, sensors and actuators, and electronics packaging.

Polymers, Interfaces, and Materials Science researchers polymer and hybrid polymer-inorganic materials, nanostructured materials, self-assembly, gels, biomaterials, and microfluidics. Applications include targeted drug delivery for cancer treatments and materials for high density optical data storage.

Advanced Aerospace Structures focuses on the fabrication of efficient, lightweight aerospace structures, in particular, the combination of materials and geometry in novel structures that are light, stiff and strong, and that also have additional properties that can be tailored to a specific application.

Researchers

George Eleftheriades, Canada Research Chair in Nano- and Micro-Structured Electromagnetic Materials and Applications – Research focuses on creating new metamaterials with microscale and nanoscale dimensions with wide-reaching applications, and is setting the bar internationally for research into nanostructured metamaterials.

Eugenia Kumacheva, Canada Research Chair in Advanced Polymer Materials – Research focuses on the design and creation of the building blocks for functional nanostructured materials in areas such as nanogels, nanoelectrochemistry, and self-assembly.

Hani Naguib, Director, Toronto Institute for Advanced Manufacturing – Research focuses on advanced and enabling materials and technologies, sustainable and transformational materials and manufacturing for energy management and health care sectors.

Goldie Nejat, Canada Research Chair in Robots for Society – Research focuses on developing intelligent mechatronics and robotic systems to assist humans in dangerous and stressful tasks, such as for search and rescue, exploration, surveillance, human-robot interaction, medical and health care applications.

Special programs and work integrated learning initiatives

Institute for Multidisciplinary Design & Innovation partners with leading companies to offer student teams opportunities to work on industrial design projects that enhance their technical competencies, develop competencies in areas from leadership to communications, and spark their entrepreneurial spirit.

Graduate Emphasis in Advanced Manufacturing –Master of Engineering students can choose to take courses from either of two streams: Manufacturing Management and Manufacturing Engineering.
